Ystad Deckarfestival
Experience excitement and mystery at Ystad Deckarfestival on April 26–27, 2025, as Ystad transforms into a meeting place for mystery lovers of all ages. The festival celebrates Henning Mankell and the world of crime fiction, where reality and fiction merge in the universe of books and films. Organized in collaboration with Svenska Deckarakademin, Visit Ystad, and Borrby Bokby, the festival offers a jam-packed program over two days.

Dan Israel, Henning Mankell's publisher
Book publisher at Ordfront, Norstedts and Leopard förlag. The first of Henning's books that he published in 1979 was Fångkolonin som försvann. He was then the publisher of most of Henning's books (with the exception of his children's books). In 2001, he started Leopard förlag together with Henning.
Anneli Høier, Henning Mankell's agent
Born in the village of Klovtoft in southern Jylland, she attended a two-grade village school, with dreams of/aims at a life in the world of books. Became an assistant at a literary agency in 1968 and immediately found her calling there: distributing literature, i.e. translation rights internationally. The agency has brokered countless literary works published in the Nordic countries, including Nobel laureates such as Heinrich Böll, Elias Canetti, J. M. Coetzee, Günter Grass, Imre Kertész, Herta Müller, Elfriede Jelinek. Not to mention the Swede Henning Mankell, for whom Anneli has been an agent since 1990, and who has been published in 42 languages and sold over 40 million copies.
Eyvind Andersen, Henning Mankell's theatre companion
Theatre director and theatre manager. Started an independent theatre group in Malmö, Gorillateatern, with a small handful of actors. A couple of years later Dalateatern together with Henning. His career has involved around seventy or eighty different productions in around fifteen different theatres. Including Teatro Avenida in Maputo, Mozambique, where Henning had a very strong commitment.
Robert Johnsson, Henning Mankell's communicator
Jan Arnald/Arne Dahl, chair no. 19
Has written around thirty books, two thirds of which under the detective pseudonym Arne Dahl and has been translated into over thirty languages.
A PhD in literary studies and a long background as a critic and magazine publisher as well as an author in his own name of books outside the crime genre. He is not particularly genre-bound but loves all kinds of thriller novels – as long as they have brains, heart, style, meaning and genuine originality.

Olle Lönnaeus, journalist and author
Olle Lönnaeus has a law degree and has worked as a political reporter for the newspaper Sydsvenskan for a long time. He has written 10 novels so far. This is what he says himself: Do I write crime novels? Well … although they are really exciting. Feelgood? Not really, although I hope you will laugh at the jokes and be touched by the seriousness. What is it then? Well, I call it “novels” for short.
Johanna Ginstmark, author, writing consultant and lecturer
Johanna writes detective stories set in Österlen. Police officer Maria returns to her hometown and encounters Österlen in full sunshine and the darkest snowstorm. We meet people who have been exposed to trauma and who carry secrets.
Tina Frennstedt, crime writer and journalist
Her crime novels in the Cold Case series take place in Skåne and especially in Österlen. Her main character is Tess Hjalmarsson and is the head of Skåne’s cold case group. The books have been sold to many countries and have been on the German Der Spiegel’s top list, among other things.
Gunilla Wedding, chair no. 8
A crime-loving cultural scientist and journalist who works as a culture and entertainment editor, writes everything from news articles and interviews to columns and theater and book reviews, but has an extra focus on crime reviews. She has her own crime column once a month that reviews new books in the genre and also has a crime blog and a podcast. She sees it as both an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to work for the betterment of crime literature together with others who are just as crazy about crime novels as she is.

Assistant Associate Professor and Docent in Literary Studies at Uppsala University. His research is literary sociology and often quantitative. He has devoted much of his time to studying audiobook readers in book streaming services, where crime stories are even more popular than in the book market at large. He has also researched translations of Nordic crime literature.
Sara Kärrholm, chair no. 4
Docent in Literary Studies and Associate Professor in Publishing and Book Market Studies at the Department of Cultural Sciences, Lund University and has primarily researched crime literature and children's and young adult literature. Has run a project that dealt with crime writers' perspectives on their writing and their marketing of themselves at literary events and in social media, and has given lectures on the crime genre in a number of popular science contexts.
Katarina Gregersdotter, chair no. 20
Docent of English literature at the Department of Language Studies, Umeå University who appreciates both the mystery crime novel and the more hard-boiled story.
Mainly researches Anglo-American and Nordic crime literature (preferably in comparison) but has also written and researched film and TV. Has written both popular science and scientific articles on crime literature, was also a literary columnist in Umeå Tidning and reviews and recommends books in Folkbladet.
John-Henri Holmberg, chair no. 9
Worked as, among other things, a magazine editor, translator, critic and writer, including afterwords in an awful lot of books. For a number of years, he worked in publishing as an editor, editorial director and publisher, including at Bokförlaget Bra Böcker where he started the crime imprint Mysterious Press.
Marie Peterson, chair no. 1
Works as a writer, critic and cultural journalist, living in Skåne. Has worked on radio and several newspapers. Marie has read crime stories since she was very young and she was one of the first critics to write serious literary criticism about crime stories.

Reporter at Svenska Dagbladet for 25 years, of which just over ten years as a crime reporter but has been a full-time writer since 2013.
Has written nearly 80 books, for children, young adults and adults. Many are about crimes against women and children, such as sexual crimes and honor-related violence, but also about organized crime. She herself mostly reads translated crime novels. Christina has written the introduction to a detective story that the Detective Festival, together with Ystads Allehanda, has used to allow schools to compete in the best resolution of the story they started.
Set Mattsson, nurse and journalist
Set Mattsson made his debut as an author in 2012 with the thriller novel Ondskans pris. Since then, he has published five more novels about the main character Douglas Palm. The novel Så länge min bror andas was published in 2016 and is about the flight of Danish Jews to Sweden in the fall of 1943. Set is well known for his outstanding descriptions of the environment and time.
Ninni Schulman, chair no. 17
Ninni started as a local editor at Värmlands Folkblad in Hagfors and has also worked at Se & Hör and Expressen. Her debut novel Flickan med snö i håret was published in 2010, followed by four books in the series about journalist Magdalena Hansson and police officers Petra Wilander and Christer Berglund. In the spring of 2018, the stand-alone thriller novel Bara du was published. Ninni has thus combined her journalistic past with her writing and created exciting stories with roots in Värmland.
Bibbi Wopenka, chair no. 7
Bibbi was born in Nordvärmland, where her interest in reading began with Enid Blyton's Famous Five books and later developed into a lifelong fascination with the crime genre. Bibbi is a trained journalist with a B.A. in sociology and English, among other things, and has worked as a public relations officer, most recently as head of communications at the City of Gothenburg's cultural administration from 1998 to 2016. In addition to being a reviewer for the crime magazine Jury and a book tipster for Radio Gothenburg, she freelances for the author's dictionary Alex. Bibbi has been press contact and website editor for Svenska Deckarakademin and its president from 2016 to 2022.

Stefan Ahnhem, crime writer and screenwriter
Stefan Ahnhem writes both screenplays and crime novels. He is well known for the critically acclaimed series about the Skåne police officer Fabian Risk. The series has sold over 2 million copies in 30 countries and has been awarded several prizes, including the Crimetime Award. The Last Nail is the sixth and final part in the series. He is constantly up to date with new books, most recently the psychological thriller Bytet, which offers nail-biting suspense.

Ewa-Gun Westford, retired police officer
Ewa-Gun became a police officer in 1974 and worked for the Skåne Police until her retirement a couple of years ago. For many years as a press spokesperson for the police. Many have seen her explain and inform in the most dramatic situations over the years. Today, Ewa-Gun lectures on the relationship between police and the media but also about women within the police.
Jimmy Endeley, actor and now police officer
Jimmy started his career as an actor and has played in a long line of police films, especially the Beck films. Later, Endeley changed careers and became a police officer. He works as a dialogue police officer and as such is often involved when things get heated between the police and the public. His dual competence makes him interesting as an advisor in the crime genre.
Ted Eriksson, police officer and actor
Ted has worked as a police officer in external service in Ystad, Stockholm and Malmö and as a preliminary investigation leader at the police contact center in Malmö. He is currently the on-call preliminary investigation leader in Ystad. Outside of the police profession, he has also worked in the film industry as a driver and assistant to Kenneth Branagh during the filming of Wallander. Ted believes that both as a police officer and in the film world, he has had to understand and treat people in the right way.
Karin Alfredsson, chair no. 16
Karin is a journalist and author and the president of Svenska Deckarakademin since 2022. She made her debut in 2006 with 80 grader från Varmvattnet, the first book about the doctor Ellen Elg, and has since written several thriller novels with themes rooted in reality. Her books deal with global injustices, from abortion bans and sex-selective abortions to honor killings and religious intolerance. In addition to crime stories, she has also written historical novels and prefers realistic stories where research plays a central role.

Marie Lundström, radio journalist and author
Many people listen to Marie every week on Lundström's book radio, where she talks to authors and gives book reviews. She has been doing a number of literature-related radio programs for thirty years. Marie debuted as an author in 2020 and has so far published two books.
Carl Johan Vallgren, author and musician
Carl-Johan made his debut in 1987 with Nomaderna and has since written about ten novels, a collection of short stories, a book of essays about Berlin and Mikael Persbrandt's memoirs. His greatest success came with Den vidunderliga kärlekens historia (2002), which was awarded the August Award, and his work has been translated into 25 languages. In addition to his writing, he is also a musician, playwright and actor, with roles in both Swedish and German films. His stories often move between magical realism, historical depictions, and contemporary criticism.
Lena Sundström, journalist and author
Lena made her debut as a writer in 2005 with Saker jag inte förstår - och personer jag inte gillar, in which she criticizes the development of social democracy from a left-wing perspective. Her most acclaimed book, Världens lyckligaste folk (2009), deals with Danish politics and xenophobia and was awarded the Guldspaden and the Publicistklubbens stora pris. She has also made several documentaries for TV4 and SVT, including Dom kallas rasister (2010) and Håll käften – eller dö (2016). Since 2015, she has worked in SVT's social affairs department and primarily for Uppdrag granskning.
Jens Mikkelsen, journalist and author
Jens has been an award-winning investigative journalist at Sydsvenskan since 2005 and has, among other things, portrayed Malmö's underworld and the black market. He has won several prestigious awards, including the Stora Journalistpriset, Guldspaden and the Publicistklubbens stora pris. In 2024, he made his thriller debut with Fristaden, the first book in a crime series about journalists Anne and Sven in Malmö, written together with Lena Sundström. The sequel Baby X will be released in spring 2025, and the series is based on the authors' forty years of experience in examining abuses and abuse of power.
Johan Theorin, chair no. 10
Johan was born in Gothenburg but has spent all his summers on northern Öland and his school years in the town of Nora, where Maria Lang lived and was renowned as a crime writer. He became a journalist and worked as a reporter and editor at various morning newspapers for twenty years, from his first job at Tranås-Posten to his last at Göteborgs-Posten, before his novel debut with Skumtimmen in 2007 and a new profession as a writer took shape. His reading experiences in the crime genre began when he was ten years old with The Hound of the Baskervilles, which his teacher Ulla read aloud to the entire middle school class.
Aino Trosell, honorary member
Full-time author since 1985. Aino has received a long list of awards over the years. Her anti-heroine Siv Dahlin has been operative in many of Aino's books. Aino has written 28 books, both novels, short stories and children's books. Also award-winning crime novels. Aino has patented the concept of Krimineller, which became the name of her crime novels.

Jörn Lier Horst, former police officer now crime author
He is educated at the Oslo Police Academy and worked as an investigation manager until he became a full-time writer in 2013. Horst's books have been published in over 40 countries with a total circulation of more than 10 million. He has received several awards, including Svenska Deckarakademin award for best crime novel translated into Swedish. Together with Thomas Enger, he writes the thriller series about police officer Alexander Blix and news blogger Emma Ramm.
Christoffer Carlsson, PhD in Criminology and author
Christoffer teaches, debates crime issues and writes. Perhaps best known for the series about Leo Junker and his Hallandssvit, but has also written for young adults. He has received a number of awards, the most recent of which is the Glasnyckeln – the award for best Nordic crime novel – for the book Levande och döda. Many have also seen Christoffer in the TV program Veckans brott.
Kerstin Bergman, chair no. 12
Kerstin is an Docent of literary studies and a crime novel reviewer. She is an editor and author of crime novels as well as a large number of academic and popular science articles about crime novels in Swedish and English. As a writer, lecturer, moderator and editor in the crime fiction field, she runs the company CrimeGarden and blogs about crime novels at crimegarden.se
Yukiko Duke, chair no. 21
Yukiko has a M.A. in Literature and Journalism. She works as a journalist, translator and author. Yuikiko translates from Japanese and has so far translated around twenty works of fiction by, among others, Nobel Prize winners and crime authors. Many people recognize Yukiko from television where she often recommends books. She herself has been reading crime novels with delight since she devoured "A Study in Red" at the age of nine and gained a new idol, living at 221b Baker Street.

Mattias Edvardsson, high school teacher, author and lecturer
Mattias lives outside Lund and in addition to his teaching degree also has a master's degree in literary studies. He is now a full-time author and writes very humorous books for children, exciting novels for young adults and crime novels set in the Scanian environment for adults. Mattias is a popular lecturer on his travels in Sweden and the world.
Christina Olséni, crime author and MBA
Christina is one half of the writing duo Olséni-Hansen. She grew up on Falsterbonäset and has an international master's degree in economics, which has taken her around various companies around the world. Christina left her financial assignments and has written full-time since her debut in 2015, including crime stories set in Skåne together with her fellow author, Micke Hansen. Christina also has a crime series for children.
Micke Hansen, artist and author
Micke toured as an artist and did children's programs in Bolibompa for almost fifteen years. In 2015, he wrote his first book together with Christina Olséni. Since their debut, the duo has published at least two books a year. They are among the most borrowed books in libraries in Sweden. They are now such an established author couple that their surnames are often said as if they were one name.
Anders de la Motte, former police officer now author
Anders has worked as a police officer and security officer. He has used that experience in the crime series he has published since his debut in 2010. Several of his books have or will become TV series - in Sweden and abroad - and Anders himself participates as a co-producer and screenwriter.
Åsa Larsson, chair no. 6
Åsa is associated with her hometown of Kiruna, where some of her books are also set. She was educated and worked as a lawyer but debuted and became a writer in 2003. In her crime novels we find Rebecka Martinsson as the main character. Åsa has also written the most notable successful books in the Pax series for children. Åsa's books have been translated into a wide range of European languages.

Håkan Nesser, teacher and crime author
Håkan's crime novels about Van Veeteren, inspector and also bookseller, have been translated into most European languages. There has been a very long list of books and also awards in the list for Håkan's bibliography. Some have also been adapted into films. In addition to crime novels, he has also written novels without any crime stories involved.
Karin Wahlberg, chair no. 18
Karin grew up in a home with good access to books. This has shaped her throughout her life. She tried several academic paths but ultimately became a doctor. During a morning meeting at the hospital, Karin got the idea for her first crime story and after that there have been another series of books set in a police environment and intrigues from the healthcare system. Karin now works part-time as a doctor and devotes her time to writing.
Lotta Olsson, chair no. 2.
Lotta is a literary critic and journalist. She started reading crime stories when she was nine, encouraged by her grandfather. Lotta worked for almost four decades at Dagens Nyheter and had her own book tips page for several years. More and more often, they were crime stories, but she was also responsible for the children's and young adult book reviews.
